LITERACY BULLETIN BOARD
This is an interactive bulletin board that hangs in the Writing Area. It’s meant to reinforce the skills taught in a meaningful way on a regular basis, the same way calendar math works to reinforce math concepts. One section has the Vocabulary Word of the Week. I choose a vocab word from our reading series that I think the children should be familiar with and introduce it to them. Then, anytime during the school year when they read the word, hear the word used, or use the word themselves, they share the experience with me and then make a tally mark on the chart. The children absolutely LOVE this and go out of their way to participate! (Right now I let them share with me right when they hear/say/read the word; if it becomes distracting, I may have a specific time of day in which they can share it, or have a log in which they can write it down and then once every other day or so we’ll go over it as a class and I’ll let them share. I like to let them share it right away while it’s fresh and they’re excited and so far that's working fine). There is also a Multiple Meaning Word of the Week. Each Tuesday after we read our story for the week from the reading anthology, I have the kids pick out as many multiple meaning words as they can in five minutes. I then choose one and have the kids write the words in a sentence for each of it’s meanings and draw an illustration for each, and select one student’s example to hang on the board. The purple section will soon hold the prefix/suffix of the week.
